Dr. Dietrich von Strom - Steampunk original character

Costume

Me as Dr. von Strom.

Me as Dr. von Strom. International Steampunk Symposium 2022.

Some elements of this costume were purchased: trenchcoat, pants, gloves, boots, goggles.

Gambeson

However, I did pattern and sew the padded vest/gambeson! I did this by starting from a t-shirt that fit in the way that I wanted. I added material for the high collar and cut a new front opening. Material was added for a slight overlap and this became my pattern! The sewing was relatively straight-forward from there. Bias tape was added to finish the edges and frog closures were added.

T-shirt. Collar added. Line for front opening defined. T-shirt. Now a flat pattern! Vest done. Ready to sew on the bias tape.

Lightning rod

The lightning rod is an original design, mostly made with PVC pipe and fittings. The head was fleshed out with EVA foam (then heat sealed and Plastidipped before painting). Some details were added with assorted plastic 'greebles'. The "lightning chambers" are clear PVC, filled with fishing line to catch the light thrown by the LEDs mounted at the base of each. Sound effects are provided by an MP3 player stored inside! The handle was 3D modeled and printed in PLA. A spring inside actuates it.

Materials: PVC, EVA foam, PLA filament, HDPE plastic parts, fishing line, LEDs and wire, MP3 player, adhesives, PlastiDip, acrylic paints.
Notable tools: Anet A8 FDM printer, soldering iron, airbrush, heat gun.
